Accepting Me

This piece is about touching and being with difficult feelings around the shape of my body, in order to help my relationship with and my acceptance of, my physical self as I am. In order to create this image I first took a photograph of myself wearing a clingy dress. I then traced the outline of my silhouette and transferred it to the canvas before painting it in. I didn’t use any further detail in this image because it was about being with the shape of my body and nothing else. The background is a warm yellow as a contrast and because I like strong warm colours. I was faced with anxiety in looking at the picture, drawing round the silhouette and with painting in the silhouette. Looking at and touching the finished picture generates anxiety. The thought of sharing this picture is what invokes the most anxiety.

I created this picture earlier this year but have only now felt ready to share it. I think creating an image depicting an anxiety provoking situation is a good way to work with difficult feelings, but it is important to have support available when doing this sort of work.
