Express It Loud

express-it-loud_small

During my childhood I was discouraged from expressing myself and this was quite damaging for me. Over the past year I have started to become more able and wanting to express myself. I have felt sadness at having been shut down as a child, and determined as an adult to be myself more. I created this picture as an antidote to the childhood programming and to reinforce the message of expressing things.

It was important to incorporate noise into this piece. The pink hanging thing is a proper working rattle. In the middle is bells from cat toys; And the push button on the right makes a very loud squealing monkey noise 🙂

Do Something AMAZING

One of my mental health workers has several times suggested that I do something amazing. With my head giving me grief, I decided to distract it by creating this amazing picture. The dots and stars are all sparkly and the worker liked the picture 🙂

My Art Work is in a Public Gallery

I now have two of my artistic creations displayed in a local art gallery. The gallery displays work by professional artists most of the time but I learned of an exhibition that was open to artists of all abilities and decided to enter two pieces of work. This is the first time I have displayed my work somewhere it will be seen by the general public and by several thousand people.

The brief was to decorate a 5 inch canvas however you liked. I wanted to create a piece which had an important message and that expressed my thoughts and beliefs. I came up with Anchored In The Present. This is a reminder to mindfully return to the present moment and to anchor oneself in the present. Inside the circle is the calmer state of the present moment. The circle is a rescue ring. I used zentangle patterns around the outside because drawing these patterns is a way of returning to the present moment.

My first attempt at Anchored in the Present didn’t go to plan so I decided to reuse the canvas and covered it with one of my blackwork embroidery designs. It is called Smile . I hope that people seeing it in the gallery will smile when they see it.

Here’s a view of both pieces on the wall in the gallery, amongst other people’s great work.

I’m really pleased to have my work in the gallery. A lot of effort went into these pieces and in finding the courage to put my work out there. This has given me a confidence boost and shown me that I do have something valuable to contribute.

I Love You

After using a guided meditation where you spent time with your inner child, I decided to create this expression of love for my inner child.

Persevere

My head was overwhelmed with anxious thoughts and so I thought it would be a good idea to do something creative to help manage my mind. An article popped up on Facebook listing 5 important words and one of those words was Persevere. Creating this image provided a bit of distraction from my thoughts and also helped to reinforce the message that I need to persevere with the changes I am making in my life.

Hitting Myself With a Tray

When experiencing destructive thoughts and feelings towards myself, I had thoughts of whacking myself on my forehead with a tray. Rather than carry out the urge, I decided to try drawing it instead. This helped me to manage the urge.

Woman Wearing Hat

This is so not my usual taste. I have used an outline image created by another artist, transferred it to canvas and coloured it my way. The original outline is  © Andy Nortik http://ebookclipart.com/design/vector-clip-art-of-a-coloring-page-of-a-pretty-young-woman-wearing-a-hat-with-flowers-and-a-pearl-necklace-by-andy-nortnik-1387 . I was looking for something neutral to paint at my craft group and this image somehow appealed. I am experiencing a desire to use images of women in my art at the moment but can’t quite put into words what it’s about yet.

Find Yourself In Creativity

Feeling low, I looked at a few blogs which were about being creative in some way. The words “There is a future in creativity” came to me. Being creative was a way in which I could move forward. I decided I wanted to create a picture which was full of colourful shapes and jazz it up with other materials. The only rules for this picture were to not use every colour available, and to keep the amount of the blue background which remained visible even. During the process I changed the words to “Find yourself in creativity”. I felt uncomfortable with sharing words suggesting that I didn’t see a future for myself in a piece of art that I wanted to share with others. “Find yourself in creativity” has multiple meanings.  Firstly, yes it is about finding a way to move forward. It is also about finding myself in general as a significant relationship had broken down. Experimenting is reflected in this work. And finally, focusing on a something creative can absorb the mind so you get a break from negative thoughts and create a space where more helpful thoughts can emerge. I particularly enjoyed creating this picture because of the fun aspect. With my previous pictures, I was implementing an image already composed in my head. With this picture I didn’t know what I was going to next whenever I sat down to work on it and so it gradually emerged over time.

Tools For Creative Expression

I have felt blocked artistically recently because of a stressful situation with my therapist. In order to reconnect with my creative self, I thought the first port of call was my tools. This image started out being about what tools I used for creative expression, however as the image progressed, I experienced feelings of affection towards my tools and joy at creative expression.
